Error Message When You Open Playlist: "Wmplayer.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Closed by Windows" (298071)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a playlist in Microsoft Windows Media Player, you may receive the following error message:
wmplayer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
Windows Media Player quits.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when an ASX playlist contains STARTMARKER or ENDMARKER tags with invalid file marker values.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Delete the playlist (.asx file), and then re-create a new playlist.

    -or-
  • Edit the .asx file and specify the correct file marker values for the STARTMARKER or ENDMARKER tags.
