SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to restart your computer after you reinstall Microsoft Windows 98, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
ICWCONN1 caused an invalid page fault in module ICWCONN1.EXE.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you reinstall Windows 98 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x installed on your computer, and Internet Explorer 5.x has not been uninstalled, but the Iemigrat.dll file has been renamed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type sfc, and then click OK.
  3. Click Extract one file from installation disk.
  4. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type ICWCONN1.EXE, and then click Start.
  5. In the Restore from box, type drive letter\\WIN98, where the drive letter is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

    NOTE: Ensure that you insert the Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
  6. In the Save file in box, type C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\CONNEC~1.
  7. When the process is complete, restart your computer.
