SYMPTOMS

When you try to copy .wav files to an audio CD-ROM (or burn to an audio CD-ROM) in Windows Media Player, you may receive error messages on some files. If you right-click the file, and then click Error Details, you may receive the following error message and the files may not be copied:
Windows Media Player cannot copy the files to the CD-ROM because they are 8-bit. Convert the files to 16-bit, 44-kHz stereo by using Sound Recorder or another audio processing program, and then try again.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the resampler that is used to convert the files for CD-ROM audio does not support 8 bits per sample; however, the resampler does support 16 bits per sample.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, convert 8-bit audio files:
  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Entertainment, and then click Sound Recorder.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, specify the name of the audio file that you want to convert, and then click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Save As.
  5. In the Save As dialog box, click Change.
  6. In the Attributes box, click 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo, and then click OK.
  7. Click Save.
  8. After you convert your files, try to copy them to a CD-ROM again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
