System Restore Does Not Restore Accessibility Options (297535)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q297535

SYMPTOMS

If you create a restore point while you are running an accessibility utility, such as Magnifier, Narrator, or On-Screen Keyboard, these utilities are not restored when you restart the computer after you use System Restore to restore the computer back to the restore point that you created while these utilities were running.

CAUSE

System Restore does not restore the user settings for the accessibility programs because the computer was forcefully shut down. System Restore must perform a forceful shutdown of the computer in order to complete the restore process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, manually re-start the accessibility utilities. To work around this behavior, use Utility Manager to set Magnifier, Narrator or On-Screen Keyboard to start during the logon process.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Magnifier, Narrator, and On-Screen Keyboard continue to run if you just restart the computer without involving System Restore in any way.
