SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Microsoft FrontPage 97 Server Extensions-based web to Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions, the Web site to which the FrontPage web has been published becomes browse-only.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you upgrade a FrontPage web that has been configured with browse-only permissions.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, edit the Service.cnf configuration file to remove the browse-only status from the web. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Web server computer, start a command prompt.
  2. Type CD\Webshare\WWWROOT\_vti_pvt (where Webshare\WWWROOT is the root Web), and then press ENTER.
  3. Type EDIT Service.cnf, and then press ENTER.
  4. Delete the vti_hasnewfeature line.
  5. On the File menu, click Save.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
  7. Quit the command prompt.
