You Cannot Connect to Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Message Transfer Agent (297139)

SYMPTOMS

When Mobile Information Server attempts to send a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) message by using Outlook Mobile Access from an Exchange Server 5.5 computer by using Collaboration Data Objects (CDO), the following event ID message is logged in the Application event log:

Event Source: SMTPCONN
Event Category: None
Event ID: 548
Date: 4/26/2001
Time: 5:53:11 AM
User: N/A
Computer: MISSERVER
Description:
Mobile Information Server SMTP Connector Service could not connect to SMTP Message Transfer Agent. Check that the SMTP service is correctly configured and is running.

CAUSE

This problem can occur due to CDO problems on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

This problem can also occur due to a hardware problem on the Mobile Information Server computer, for example, Mobile Information Server is unable to write to disk, or there is a network failure.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, check the following settings on your server to ensure CDO functionality:

Ensure that Outlook Web Access (OWA) functions
Name resolution
Remote procedure call (RPC) Connectivity
