Custom Attributes Are Not Viewable in ADSI Edit Even After Updating the Schema Cache (297132)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1

This article was previously published under Q297132

SYMPTOMS

After you correctly create custom attributes and link them to the User class, you cannot set the attribute by using ADSI Edit because it does not show up in the list of available attributes.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the ADSI cache is out of date. When the date of the computer is adjusted to a future date, the Schema is also modified and updated. Therefore, because the time on the file is for that future date, the .sch file is not updated because the current update time is prior to the date of the last modification of the file and the change is rejected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, delete the .sch files from %SystemRoot%\SchCache folder, and then reload the Schema using the Active Directory Schema snap-in. Deleting the .sch files (the schema cache files) forces Active Directory to re-load the updated Schema in memory

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
