Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 Pre-Installation Checklist (296565)

Microsoft recommends that you complete the following pre-installation checklist to ensure that you install MOM successfully:

• Make sure that you have the Installation Guide. You may need to refer to this guide for details about how to perform some of the tasks described in this section. The Installation Guide is located in the Documentation folder on the installation CD-ROM.
• Install the central components (Database, Data Access Server [DAS] account, Consolidator and Agent Manager) on the same computer in a domain, and not in a workgroup.
• Verify that a domain controller is available during the installation.
  
  NOTE: If you want to install the central components to a backup domain controller (BDC), refer to the Installation Guide.
• If this computer is a new computer, and you plan to implement a typical installation (Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Transaction Server [MTS]), build the server in the following order:
  1. Install Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
  2. Install the latest Windows 2000 service pack.
  3. Install SQL Server 2000 or later versions. For more information, see the "Installing SQL Server" topic in the Installation Guide.
  4. Install the full version of Microsoft Access 2000 or Microsoft Access 2002 and Microsoft Graph from the Office Tools installation package. Alternatively, you may also choose the run-time version of Access 2000 that is available from installation process or the CD-ROM.
  NOTE: If you plan to implement an Express installation (you install Microsoft Data Engine [MSDE], but not MTS or SQL Server, there is a 2-GB database size limit), refer to the Installation Guide.
  
  
• If you plan to use the Web Console server component, verify that Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or later is installed.
• Verify that Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later is installed.
• If you install MOM on a preexisting SQL Server computer, verify that the sort order is case insensitive. To do so, run the sp_helpsort query. The 'OnePoint' database cannot be installed to a SQL Server computer that has a case-sensitive sort order.
• Open the SQL Server computer properties, and then click the Security tab. Verify that the audit level is set to None or Failure. The default setting is None.
• Verify that you are not using a clustered SQL Server computer as your database.
• If you want to use Reports, install either a full or run-time version of Access 2000 or Access 2002. The Access run-time version has been tested with MOM and it is available on the installation CD-ROM. The Pre-Requisite Checker that is bundled in the installation program checks for the presence of this program, and it offers to install it for you.
• Create the Consolidator and DAS service accounts. You can use one account for both. Make sure that the Consolidator account has administrator rights over all prospective agent computers. You can use a Domain Administrator account or a Domain User account that is a local administrator account on each computer. If the DAS account is a local account, you must give it the following advanced user rights:
  • Log on as a service
  • Log on as batch job
  • Act as part of the operating system
  • Create a token object
• Make sure that the Consolidator and DAS service accounts contain a password. MOM does not function correctly if either of these accounts are configured without a password.
• If you plan to use e-mail notification, create a dedicated e-mail account for the Consolidator account to use. MOM supports Microsoft Exchange and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) for e-mail notification. Configure the e-mail account so that it does not save sent messages. Store the mailbox on the e-mail server so that the mailbox is accessible from all central computers.
• The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) log file must be set to 64 megabytes (MB) or 512 MB. You can successfully install MOM if the MSDTC log file is set to 64 MB; however, Microsoft recommends that you configure the MSDTC log file size to 512 MB.
