Shuttle Sharer Parallel Port Storage Device Stops the Upgrade to Windows 2000 (296478)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade your computer from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:
The following items are not compatible with Windows 2000. Setup cannot continue. Resolve the compatibility issue with each item before running Setup again.

For more information about an item, select it, and then click Details.

Shuttle Sharer parallel port storage device
The upgrade report (Compat.txt) reports the following information:

The currently installed driver for the parallel port storage device installed on this computer is not compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 and must be uninstalled before Windows 2000 Setup can continue.

Any device that uses the Shuttle Port Parallel driver will not be available during and after the upgrade to Windows 2000.

For a list of devices supported by Windows 2000, see the Microsoft Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/whql/default.mspx. Your Windows 2000 CD includes a copy of this list (drive:\Support\hcl.txt) that was accurate as of the date Windows 2000 was released.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Windows NT 4.0 device driver for Shuttle Sharer is not compatible with Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact the vendor of the device that uses the Shuttle Sharer driver to obtain a driver that is compatible with Windows 2000.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, disable the Shuttle Sharer parallel port storage device, and then run Setup again:
  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Devices.
  3. In the Devices dialog box, click Shuttle Sharer, and then click Startup.
  4. In the Device dialog box, click Disabled, and then click OK.
  5. In the Devices dialog box, click Stop to stop the device.
  6. Run WinNT32.exe again to upgrade the computer to Windows 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows NT 4.0, there is no way to uninstall this particular device driver. You can only disable the loading of the driver.
