The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98

This article was previously published under Q296415

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Microsoft Word "lock" feature to protect a field in the body of an e-mail message and you then try to send the message, you may receive the following error message:
This method or property is not available because the object refers to a protected area of the document.
This behavior occurs when you use Word as your e-mail editor and you base the message on a form that you create by using an Outlook custom form template.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Always check spelling before sending option is turned on. When you use an Outlook WordMail form that has protected fields, the spelling checker cannot check these fields.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, turn off the automatic spelling check for Outlook messages:
  1. In Outlook, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling tab.
  2. Click to clear the Always check spelling before sending check box, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

As an alternative to checking the spelling in a message before sending the message, turn on the Word option to check spelling as you type:
  1. In Word, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  2. Click to select the Check spelling as you type check box, and then click OK.
