SYMPTOMS

When you open a Web archive file on an FTP server, you find that the document opens with extraneous Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) headers similar to the following:
MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Location: file:///C:/A5533D54/Filename.htm Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii"

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You are using FTP to open the file.
  • The file was created using Microsoft Word.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use HTTP to open the file instead of FTP.

For example, if you opened the file by using a format similar to the following example

ftp://servername/filename.mht

you could use a format similar to the following example:

http://servername/filename.mht

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

A Web archive saves all the elements of a Web site, including text and graphics, into a single file. This encapsulation lets you publish your whole Web site as a single MIME encapsulated aggregate HTML document (MHTML) file or send an entire Web site as an e-mail message or attachment. This format is supported by Internet Explorer 4.0 and later.

MIME is a standard that extends the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to permit data, such as video, sound, and binary files, to be transmitted by Internet e-mail without having to be translated into ASCII format first.
