Internet Explorer Converts Extra Colons into Forward Slashes in Web Addresses (296291)

SYMPTOMS

When you type the Web address of a Web site that you want to visit in the Address bar or the Run dialog box, Internet Explorer displays a page with the following message:
This page cannot be displayed.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you type an extra (:) colon in the Web address of the site that you want to visit. Internet Explorer does not remove the extra colon to automatically correct the Web address. Instead, Internet Explorer converts the extra colon into a (/) forward slash.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the correct Web address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
