PRB: Application Center 2000 Installation Fails During MSDE Installation (296152)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Application Center 2000

This article was previously published under Q296152

SYMPTOMS

While installing Application Center 2000, you may receive a message similar to the following during the installation of the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE):
Internal Error 2744. Setup failed, rolling back.
In reviewing the Ac_setup.log, you may see a message like the following before rollback:
Action: InstallPerfMon.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B.
Loading extended custom action library sqlcax.dll
Starting custom action InstallPerfMon
Registering performance counters from sqlctr.ini
PerfmonLoad routine returned error code 6
At this point, the installation of Application Center 2000 halts and rolls back (the installation is reversed).

CAUSE

This is caused by bad records in the registry, possibly from a previous installation of Microsoft SQL Server, at the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\MSQLSERVER\PERFORMANCE

-or-

You did not stop SNMP service before installing MSDE or SQL Server. The SQL Server installation warns you about this but the application center install does not.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, go to the registry key mentioned in the "Cause" section and delete that key. Perform the installation of Application Center 2000 again.
