SYMPTOMS

Some font names from the Font list on the Formatting toolbar appear blank or are missing. In addition, text formatted in these missing fonts is not visible.

NOTE: This problem only occurs in the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) Font list, which attempts to display the actual typeface; however, the names do appear in the Font list in the Format dialog box, which is non-WYSIWYG.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when NT File System (NTFS) file permissions on TrueType or OpenType font files are read-only.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, set the NTFS file permissions on the fonts to Read & Execute. This allows the fonts to be displayed correctly in Microsoft Visio.

NOTE: This same issue can occur in other Microsoft Office programs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When TrueType or OpenType font files have read-only NTFS file permissions (Read), the font can be found, but not executed. Because font files are almost executable files, they need the additional file permission of Execute, such as Read &Execute, for a program to display them.

By default, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 2000 set the permissions on system font files to Read & Execute, but a system can be reconfigured for a lock-down and the permissions restricted to Read (read-only).
