Cluster Server Virtual Nodes Are Listed as Managed Nodes (296040)

SYMPTOMS

If Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 discovers a cluster server virtual node, the node appears in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) as a managed computer. As a result, virtual server appears in the agent's view, but with a blank Last Contact Time.

CAUSE

The MOM agent runs on the physical node and is not associated with the virtual servers.

WORKAROUND

The fact that virtual servers appear as managed computers is not a functional problem. The Exchange Server 2000 Server reports require that the virtual servers be included in the Managed Computer Rules in MOM so that they can be associated with the Exchange Server 2000 computer group.

However, if you want to remove virtual servers from the set of managed computers, you can create a managed computer rule that excludes the virtual server name. Note that computers are excluded from or included in a computer group regardless of their other properties. All changes take effect at the next managed computer scan. To remove virtual servers from a set of managed computers, follow these steps:
  1. In the left pane, expand Operations Manager.
  2. In the left pane, expand Rules.
  3. In the left pane, expand Computer Groups.
  4. In the right pane, click the computer group from which you want to exclude computers.
  5. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  6. On the Excluded Computers tab, click Add.
  7. Identify the computer that you want to exclude. Or, you can click Browse to identify the computer that you want to exclude. After you identify the computer, click OK.
