SYMPTOMS

When you delegate a zone under the "root" by using the Domain Name System (DNS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Delegation Wizard, you cannot continue with the wizard because the Next button is dimmed (unavailable).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, manually add the zone delegation:
  1. Edit the root (.) DNS zone file: open the root (.) DNS file in the %Systemroot%\System32\Dns folder.

    NOTE: If the root (.) DNS file is not there, the zone may be integrated with Active Directory. If so, you must click to clear the check box on the Properties page of the root (.) zone so that DNS can write a text file to the \DNS folder.
  2. Add the following lines under the current text and replace ..(DomainName), (IPAddress), and (NameServer) with your own unique information.
  3. Text to add:
    • ;
    • ; Delegated sub-zone: (DomainName).com.
    • ;
    • (DomainName) NS (NameServer).
    • (NameServer) A (IPAddress)
    • ; End delegation
    • Reload the the root zone from the DNS MMC snap-in: right-click the root (.) zone, and then click Reload.
