SYMPTOMS

When you configure a default Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) editor in Internet Explorer and the icon for the editor program is displayed on the toolbar, and then you browse to a Web site that had been edited with a different program, the icon on the toolbar changes.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer. Each Office program inserts a <meta> tag into the HTML file when it is saved. When Internet Explorer views this tag in an HTML page, it changes the default HTML editor to the one that had been last used to edit the page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, start your HTML editor, and then point it to the HTML page that you want to edit.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Examples of meta tags added by Office programs include:
  • Microsoft Excel: <meta name=ProgId content=Excel.Sheet>
  • Microsoft PowerPoint: <meta name=ProgId content=PowerPoint.Slide>
  • Microsoft Word: <meta name=ProgId content=Word.Document>
