Subscriptions Feature Does Not Honor Exchange Server 5.5 Security (294327)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Subscriptions feature of SharePoint Portal Server, it may not honor the security settings for content that is crawled on an Exchange Server 5.5 computer. Exchange Server 5.5 users receive subscription notifications for all Exchange Server 5.5 Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), regardless of their permissions.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, configure the program to ignore security for Exchange Server 5.5 URLs. To do so, modify a registry key to enable Subscriptions notifications for all Exchange Server 5.5 URLs. By default, the registry key blocks all subscription hits for content crawled on an Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

To enable Subscription notifications for Exchange Server 5.5 URLs:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharePoint Portal Server.

  4. Right-click AllowUnsecureExchange55Subscriptions, and then click Modify.
  5. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  6. Close Registry Editor.
  7. Restart Microsoft Search (MSSearch). To do so:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click Microsoft Search, and then click Restart.
The coordinator cannot delete the discussion.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
