This article was previously published under Q294216

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 user that is a member of a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain uses Web Conferencing Scheduler to log on to an online conference that is being hosted in a remote site, authentication is rejected three times and then the user sees a Web page with the following error message:
HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a trust does not exist between the Windows NT 4.0 domain and the Windows 2000 remote site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, establish a one-way domain trust between the Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 domains where the Windows NT 4.0 domain is "trusted by" the Windows 2000 domain and the Windows 2000 domain is "trusting" the Windows NT 4.0 domain:
  1. In Windows NT 4.0, open User Manager for Domains.
  2. On the Policies menu, click Trust Relationships.
  3. Under Trusting Domains, click Add. Type the domain name of the Windows 2000 domain and a password, confirm the password, and then click OK.
  4. In Windows 2000, open Active Directory Domains and Trusts.
  5. Right-click the domain for which you want to build trust relationships, and then click Properties.
  6. On the Trusts tab, click Add next to the Domains trusted by this domain box.
  7. Type the Windows NT 4.0 domain name and the password, confirm the password, and then click OK.
  8. Allow time for replication.
