SYMPTOMS

If you perform an Administrative installation of Microsoft Visio 2002 (setup.exe /a) to create an installation point on a network server, Visio unexpectedly overwrites the earlier installation on the network server.

If you perform an Administrative installation of Visio 2002 on top of another version of Visio, network users may see new content (such as menu items), but this content may not be installed or registered properly. When the user attempts to use this content, errors may occur.

CAUSE

When you perform an Administrative installation in a folder that has an existing installation of this type, Visio 2002 overwrites the setup information files for the earlier installation.

NOTE: No error message or warning is issued when this behavior occurs.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior from occurring, be sure to specify a unique location when you create an Administrative installation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
