Visio2002: Text Is Added to the Group Instead of to the Shape Within the Group in XML Drawings (294064)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q294064

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add text to a shape within a group in Microsoft Visio 2002, the text may be added to the group instead of to the shape within the group.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The drawing file is created in Microsoft Visio 2000 by using the Processing Engineering template.

    -and-
  • The drawing file is saved as a Microsoft Visio 2002 Extensible Markup Language (XML) drawing (.vdx) file.
The default behavior for adding or editing text in shapes within groups in Process Engineering drawings is different in Visio 2000 from that of Visio 2002. In Visio 2000, when you add text to a group, the text is added by default to the uppermost shape in the group. In Visio 2002, the text is added by default to the group. This setting applies to all XML drawing files that are opened and then saved in Visio 2002. As a result, when you save a drawing file created in Visio 2000 as a Visio 2002 XML drawing, and then add or edit text, the text is added to the group.

RESOLUTION

To add or edit text in a shape within a group, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio 2002, and then open your XML drawing.
  2. Select the group.

A dashed green line and green selection handles indicate that the group is selected.
  3. Click the shape that you want to add text to.

Green selection handles around the shape indicate that the shape is selected.
  4. Click the Text Tool icon on the standard toolbar.
  5. Add some text to (or edit text in) the shape.
  6. Press ESC or click an empty area of the drawing page when you finish adding text.
