PUB2002: Publisher Creates Larger than Expected PostScript Files Under Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (293534)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Publisher 2002, when you print or save your publication to a PostScript file on Windows 98- or Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer, the PostScript file is much larger than expected. This behavior does not occur on computers running other versions of Windows.

CAUSE

If the publication contains OfficeArt AutoShape objects that use the Draw border inside frame option, the PostScript language interprets the "inset line" as many tiny line segments rather than as a single line stroke. This occurs so that all the lines can intersect and overlap each other and to allow for greater consistancy when applying trapping values to the line segments.

Certain shapes produce more of these line segments than others. A square produces the fewest. A flattened oval produces the most becuase it has the most intersections along its line path.

If you turn off the Draw border inside frame option, you may experience trapping problems with very heavy lines. This is because trapping in Publisher is defined from the edge of the object, not the edge of the drawn line. When Draw border inside frame is off, the line will be drawn on either side of the object's border. The heavier the line, the more that will obscure the trapping around the object's edges.

NOTE: Trapping settings are only used if you are printing separations for CMYK or spot color output.

WORKAROUND

If available, take your publication to a Windows 2000- or Windows NT 4.0-based computer and print your PostScript file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
