Clip2002: Multiple Keyword Search Finds Fewer Clips than Expected (293308)

SYMPTOMS

If you type more than one keyword in the Search text box, and then click Search, Microsoft Clip Organizer returns fewer search results than expected. This behavior is different from previous versions.

This behavior occurs even when you use "or" in the search text string, for example, cat or dog.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Clip Organizer always uses the keywords in an AND function, and therefore narrows the search to include only clips that contain both keywords. For example if you search for the keyword "dog", the search results include all clips with the keyword "dog". However, if you search for keywords with any of the following text strings

dog cat
dog or cat
dog and cat
dog; cat

the search returns only clips that have both the dog and cat keyword, so fewer clips are returned.

The reason that Clip Organizer returns fewer search results than an equivalent search in previous versions (such as Clip Gallery) is that Clip Gallery uses keywords in an OR function and therefore broadens the search to include clips with either cat or dog as the keyword.

RESOLUTION

To broaden the search, you must use keywords with a larger scope. For example, to search for clips of a dog or a cat, you may want to use the keyword "Pet", or "Animal".
