OL2002: Items You Intend to Delete Permanently Appear in Deleted Items Folder Instead (293013)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q293013
This article discusses a Beta test product that is not yet announced or released publicly by Microsoft. Please feel free to familiarize yourself with this product, test it, and report problems to Microsoft.

SYMPTOMS

While you are using a Hotmail account, when you click a message and then press SHIFT+DELETE, the message goes to the Deleted Items folder instead of being permanently deleted.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Hotmail servers do not process the permanent deletion method that Outlook 2002 is sending. Instead, Outlook 2002 sends the deleted message to the Deleted Items folder and does not warn you that the message is not permanently deleted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, either open the Deleted Items folder and delete the message from there, or wait for the Hotmail servers to automatically clean out all deleted messages.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
