SYMPTOMS

When you start any of the games listed in the "Applies to" section of this article in three-dimensional (3-D) mode, the game may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Universal Serial Bus (USB) device is using the same bus as the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) video card.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Run the game in Software Mode

Configure the 3-D renderer to use Software Rasterization when you start the game.

Note An Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) or Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) video card with 16 MB of video RAM that supports Direct3D and is compatible with DirectX 8.1 or later is required for MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries.

Note If you turned off the 3-D renderer and then began experiencing the problem described in the "Symptoms" section, remove and reinstall the game.

Method 2: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under DirectX Features, next to AGP Texture Acceleration, click Disable.
  5. When you receive the following warning, click OK:

This will disable usage of AGP (Acceleration Graphics Port) for all display devices on your system which support it.

  6. Click Exit.

Method 3: Change the Adapter Refresh Rate to Optimal or Adapter Default

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click the Adapter tab.

In the Refresh rate list, select either Optimal or Adapter Default.
  5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
  6. Click Yes to accept the changes.
  7. Click OK.
