OL2002: The System Stops Responding If You Quit Outlook While You Are Sending a Large Message (291489)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

This article was previously published under Q291489

SYMPTOMS

If you quit Outlook while the program is sending a large message, you may receive a call-stack error, and the system may stop responding (hang). This occurs if Outlook is running in a Windows NT 4.0-based environment.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, wait until the message is sent, and then quit Outlook.

You can also restart the computer, or you can stop and then restart the Machine Debug Manager service to register the program again and prevent the apparent "hang" of Outlook. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Right-click Machine Debug Manager, and then click Stop.
  3. Right-click Machine Debug Manager, and then click Start.
  4. Close the Services dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior typically occurs after you upgrade Outlook or Microsoft Office from a pre-release beta version of the software. Microsoft recommends that you completely remove all traces of beta version software before you install any final released version. In some cases, you might need to reformat your computer. Upgrading to released versions of the software is not supported.
