WD2002: Cannot Place Frame or Text Box in Exact Position (290963)

SYMPTOMS

When you insert, move, or resize a text box, you may be unable to place it exactly where you want it, either horizontally or vertically. Similarly, when you try to move or resize a frame, you may be unable to place it exactly where you want it, either horizontally or vertically.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Snap objects to grid check box in the Drawing Grid dialog box is selected. This check box is selected by default.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the ALT Key

Hold down the ALT key when you insert, move, or resize your frame or text box.

Method 2: Format Your Frame or Text Box

  1. Select the frame or text box.
  2. On the Format menu, do one of the following:
    • Click Frame. In the Frame dialog box, make the changes to the Size, Horizontal, or Vertical settings that you want, and then click OK.

      NOTE: You can also make a change to the way that the text wraps around your frame.

      -or-
    • On the Format menu, click Text Box. In the Format Text Box dialog box, make the changes to the text box that you want on the Size and Layout tabs.

      NOTE: You can also make any changes that you want on the Color and Lines, Text Box, and Web tabs.

Method 3: Turn Off "Snap Objects To Grid"

  1. Click the Drawing icon on the standard toolbar to display the Drawing toolbar.
  2. On the Drawing toolbar, click Draw, and then click Grid.
  3. In the Drawing Grid dialog box, click to clear the Snap objects to grid check box, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

A grid is a network of invisible lines that helps you align drawing objects on the drawing layer. If the Snap objects to grid check box is selected for the drawing layer, frames inserted on the text layer are also affected.
