"Error 1415: Visio is unable to edit the Unknown object" error message when you edit an embedded AutoCad (CAD) object in Visio 2002 (290895)

SYMPTOMS

When you choose to do a custom installation of Microsoft Visio 2002 with all Add-ons marked as "install on first use", and you attempt to edit an embedded AutoCad (CAD) object, the following error message may appear:
Error 1415: Visio is unable to edit the Unknown object.
NOTE: The embedded object may not be visible. It may appear as a blank selection in the drawing.

RESOLUTION

In order to display and work with inserted AutoCad (CAD) objects in Microsoft Visio 2002, you must install the CAD Drawing component.

Run the Visio 2002 Setup program in Maintenance Mode, and install the CAD Drawing files. To do this, used the appropriate method for your operating system.

Method 1: Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), or Windows NT 4.0

  1. Click Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Visio Standard or Professional 2002, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Microsoft Visio 2002 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Expand Add-ons by clicking the plus sign.
  6. Click CAD Drawing.
  7. Click Run from My Computer or Run All from My Computer.
  8. Click Install.

Method 2: Microsoft Windows 2000

  1. Click Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Visio Standard or Professional 2002, and then click Change.
  4. In the Microsoft Visio 2002 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  5. Expand Add-ons by clicking the plus sign.
  6. Click CAD Drawing.
  7. Click Run from My Computer or Run All from My Computer.
  8. Click Install.
