  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q290860

SYMPTOMS

When you import your Microsoft Outlook Express 5 e-mail, addresses, and rules, only the addresses are imported. When you select the Outlook Express folder that you want to import from, you may receive he following error message:
The mail folder could not be opened. If another application is using this file, please close it and try again.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you click Cancel in the Choose Identity dialog box, and then click the Outlook Express folder as the folder that you want to import from in the import wizard.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, start the import wizard again, and select an Outlook Express Identity to import from.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Identities in Outlook Express are similar to profiles in Outlook. If you log off of your current identity, and do not log on to another one before you close Outlook Express, Outlook does not know which identity to import your e-mail messages from. During the import process, you will receive a list of all the current identities on the computer. If you click Cancel, it indicates that you are importing an Outlook Express 4.0 e-mail file. You will then receive a prompt to browse to the folder that contains your e-mail messages. If you click the Outlook Express folder, and then click OK, the import appears to proceed normally but only addresses are imported.

To import your e-mail messages and rules from Outlook Express, run the import wizard again, and select an identity to import from. Because you have already imported the addresses, you must click to clear the Import Address Book check box in the import wizard when you receive the prompt that asks you what you want to import. All of your e-mail messages and rules are then properly imported from Outlook Express.
