OL2002: Images That You Insert with Word Do Not Display HTML Signatures (290749)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q290749

SYMPTOMS

If you want to create a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) signature and include a picture in Outlook 2002, the Advanced Edit feature in Microsoft Word 2002 allows you to insert the picture. In the Signature Preview display box, the picture appears correct. However, when you apply this signature to your messages, the image that you inserted does not appear, and there is only a placeholder for the graphic.

When you open Microsoft Notepad, the graphic may be represented with a HTML tag similar to the following code:
<v:imagedata src="wordcustomer_files/image001.jpg" o:title="MCSE%20logo"/>

The correct HTML tag should be in following format:
<img src="../../../My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/MCSE%20logo.jpg" width="279" height="93">

CAUSE

This problem occurs when Word is set as your default HTML editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a different HTML editor when you edit Outlook signatures. Change the default HTML editor to FrontPage, Notepad, or other HTML editors by using the following steps:
  1. To set the default HTML editor, start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Programs tab, and then click the desired HTML editor from the list.
  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
