DocIm2002: Search Detects Words That You Are Not Looking for (290461)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office XP Document Imaging
  • Microsoft Office XP Document Scanning

This article was previously published under Q290461

SYMPTOMS

When you search for a group of words in a scanned document, not only are those words highlighted, but other words are highlighted as well. These extra words contain sequences of letters that match the words you searched for.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) search engine searches for character sequence matches and not for exact words when it searches a document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  2. Type only one word in the Find box.

MORE INFORMATION

When you search for more than one word in a scanned document, letter sequences that combine to form those words are detected and highlighted. For example, if you search for the words "on the" in a document, the following words could also be detected:

on they
on themselves
conviction they
