Duplicate GUID Entries in WMS Logs (290370)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.1

This article was previously published under Q290370

SYMPTOMS

When looking through Windows Media server logs, you may see the same GUID (Globally unique identifier) logged for different IP addresses and client versions.

CAUSE

The most common reason for seeing this behavior is when Windows Media Player is pre-installed on a computer that is being used as a source operating system image, and that operating system image is then copied onto other computers. When any of the duplicated computers stream Windows Media files from a Windows Media server, they all log the same player GUID that the source computer had.
