OFFXP: OSB Buttons Move or Appear When Renamed (290116)

SYMPTOMS

When you rename a Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) button and then click OK, the following problems may occur:
  • Renamed buttons that previously appeared on the Office Shortcut Bar are moved to the end of the toolbar.

    -or-
  • Renamed buttons that did not previously appear on the Office Shortcut Bar, appear on the toolbar.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move the renamed buttons back to the location that you want by using the Customize dialog box of the OSB.

You can also hide the newly renamed buttons by using the Customize dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click a blank area on the Office Shortcut Bar, and then click Customize on the shortcut menu.
  2. On the Buttons tab, click one of the buttons that you renamed. You may need to scroll down the button list.
  3. Click the appropriate Move button multiple times to move the button to the location that you want.
  4. If you want to hide the button, click to clear the check box to the left of the newly renamed button.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for every button that you want to move or hide.
  6. Click OK.
The Office Shortcut Bar should display the new name for the button in the correct location. If the new name does not appear or the button appears in the incorrect location, right-click the Office Shortcut Bar, and then click Refresh Icons.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
