Outlook downloads duplicate POP3 messages after Exchange Server is temporarily offline (290043)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q290043

SYMPTOMS

After you configure Outlook 2002 to download messages from a Post Office Protocol (POP3) server and to deliver the messages to an Exchange Server mailbox, you may receive duplicated messages when you run a Send/Receive operation after the Exchange Server is unavailable (offline) for a period of time.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because, when Exchange Server is offline, the Exchange mailbox (your default delivery location) cannot properly keep track of which POP3 messages have already been downloaded. Outlook therefore performs a second download of the POP3 messages.

This behavior occurs only if the POP3 account is configured to leave a copy of messages on the POP3 server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
