OL2002: Outlook Bar Shortcut to Hotmail or IMAP Inbox Changes When You Cancel Password Prompt (290002)

SYMPTOMS

After you password-protect the personal folder file (.pst) for your Hotmail or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) account, when you click the Hotmail or IMAP Inbox shortcut on the Outlook Bar and then click Cancel in the password prompt, clicking the Outlook Bar shortcut again rewrites it to point to the default Inbox.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, avoid canceling the password prompt after you click the shortcut to the Hotmail or IMAP Inbox.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

If the Outlook Bar shortcut is rewritten to point to the default Inbox folder, you can recreate the original shortcut:
  1. Right-click the existing Hotmail or IMAP Inbox shortcut, and then click Remove from Outlook Bar.
  2. When you are prompted, click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  3. Restart Outlook in the appropriate profile.
  4. Use the folder list to move to the Hotmail Inbox. Provide the personal folder file (.pst) password when you are prompted.
  5. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Outlook Bar Shortcut.
  6. In the Add to Outlook Bar dialog box, locate and click the appropriate Inbox, and then click OK.
