Insert Picture into Header

New functionality in Excel 2002 provides the ability to add pictures to the header or footer areas of a worksheet. To do this, click the Insert Picture button in the Custom Header dialog box or the Custom Footer dialog box.

To insert a picture into the left section of a worksheet's header, follow these steps:
  1. Start Excel, type Header Graphics in cell A1, and then press ENTER.
  2. On the File menu, click Page Setup.
  3. On the Header/Footer tab, click Custom Header, and then click the Insert Picture button.
  4. Double-click Sample.jpg.

The placeholder &[Picture] is added to the header.
  5. Click OK to return to the Page Setup dialog box, and then click OK to return to the worksheet.
  6. On the File menu, click Print Preview. If the margins are not visible, click Margins.

The picture extends beyond the header margin and obscures the data in cell A1.
You can add pictures to the left section, center section, or right section, or all sections of a worksheet's header or footer by using this method. The pictures are aligned left, center, or right, respectively. To add a picture to the footer, follow this same method, but click Custom Footer in step 3.

Change the Size of the Picture

To change the size of the picture, follow these steps:
  1. Click Page Setup, and then click Custom Header.
  2. Click the Format Picture button.
  3. Clear the Height box, and then type .5 in the Height box.

Because the Lock aspect ratio and Relative to original picture size check boxes are selected, the other dimensions change in proportion to the change that you make in the Height box.
  4. Click OK to return to the Page Setup dialog box, and then click OK to again preview the worksheet.
NOTE: After you have placed and formatted a picture, if you decide to move it to another section of the header or footer, you can copy and paste the code &[Picture], but you need to select the picture again and reformat it if you do so.
