Microsoft Office smart tags are a set of buttons that appear after certain actions or automatic changes occur. This article explains how to turn off some of the buttons in PowerPoint, so that the buttons do not appear.

The buttons appear as small icons that blend into the document, and then increase in size and contrast when you rest the mouse pointer over them. The buttons have a menu of common commands that are useful after an action or automatic change occurs.

PowerPoint has four built-in buttons:
  • Paste Options
  • AutoCorrect Options
  • Automatic Layout Options
  • AutoFit Options
You can prevent all of these buttons, except for the AutoFit Options button, from appearing in PowerPoint.

Turning off the Paste Options Button

To prevent the Paste Options button from appearing, follow these steps:
  1. Start PowerPoint.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Edit tab, click to clear the Show Paste Options buttons check box, and then click OK.

Turning off the AutoCorrect Options Button

To prevent the AutoCorrect Options button from appearing, follow these steps:
  1. Start PowerPoint.
  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  3. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to clear the Show AutoCorrect Options Buttons check box, and then click OK.

Turning off the Automatic Layout Button

To prevent the Automatic Layout button from appearing, follow these steps:
  1. Start PowerPoint.
  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  3. On the AutoFormat As You Type tab, click to clear the Automatic layout for inserted objects check box, and then click OK.
