When you install or upgrade to Windows 2000, setup may stop responding during hardware detection or after the first system restart. The screen may remain black and comma characters may appear on the monitor.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if any of the following display adapters is installed in the computer:
  • The ATI Xpert 2000
  • The ATI Xpert 128
  • The ATI Rage 128
These display adapters are manufactured by ATI Technologies Inc.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then restore the generic VGA display adapter driver. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Press the Reset button on the front panel of the computer case.

If your computer does not have a Reset button, turn off and then turn on the computer.
  2. Press F8 when Please select the operating system to start appears on the screen.

If other operating systems are installed on the computer, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft Windows 2000 and then press ENTER.

Note If only one operating system is installed, this menu may not appear. If this applies to your installation, press F8 after the Power On Self Test (POST) to activate this menu.
  3. In the Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
  4. After you have successfully started Windows in Safe Mode, click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Display.
  6. Click the Settings tab, and then click the Advanced button.
  7. Click the Adapter tab, and then click the Change button.
  8. Change the display adapter to Standard VGA.
  9. Restart the computer in Normal mode.
If these steps resolve the problem, contact the display adapter manufacturer to obtain a Windows 2000 device driver.

If you cannot start the computer in Safe Mode, you may have to replace the physical display adapter in the computer with one that is listed on the Windows 2000 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).
