Unexpected Characters Are Displayed When You Use Outlook Mobile Access (288865)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Outlook Mobile Access (a component of Microsoft Mobile Information Server) to browse an Exchange Server mailbox, some messages may include characters that are not intended for the message.

For example, the following message is displayed in Microsoft Outlook:

Isn't it a beautiful day.


When you view this message from a mobile device using Outlook Mobile Access, the following message is displayed:

Isn?t it a beautiful day.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the person who sent you the message uses Microsoft Word as the e-mail editor. When you use the rich features of Word to send e-mail messages, special characters are used occasionally to format the message. These characters may not be displayed as expected when you view the message using Outlook Mobile Access.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Microsoft Outlook to create messages so that unexpected characters are not displayed when you view the message using Outlook Mobile Access.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
