SUMMARY

SMTP Service versions 4.0 and 5.0 accepts .eml messages. You can create these in Outlook Express and then save them for testing.

MORE INFORMATION

To create a test message using Outlook Express:

Procedure A: Create an Outlook Express Account

  1. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. In the Display Name box, type the name that you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
  4. In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account that you are using (such as username@microsoft.com), and then click Next.
  5. Under E-mail Server Names, select the appropriate incoming e-mail server type (Post Office Protocol version 3 [POP3] is the default type), and then type the names of your incoming and outgoing e-mail servers. Click Next.
  6. Depending on your logon type, either type your POP account name and password in the POP Account Name and Password boxes, or select Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA). Click Next.
  7. In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type a name to identify the mail account that you are configuring, click Next, and then click Finish.

NOTE: If you do not create an Outlook Express account, the message you create will not have a From field. Therefore, the SMTP Service will not deliver the message and it will immediately go to the Bad folder.

Procedure B: Create the Test Message

  1. On the File menu, click New, and then click Mail Message.

NOTE: You can also click the New Mail button.
  2. Enter a recipient address in the To field in the form of user_name@domain_name.com.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Check Names.
  4. Type the subject, and then some text in the body of the message.
  5. On the File menu, click Save As. From the Save Message As dialog box, click the root folder for the SMTP Service. By default this is %SystemRoot%\Inetpub\Mailroot or C:\Inetpub\Mailroot.
  6. Close the message.
You can use this message to test mail flow with the SMTP Service. To test the message, copy and paste the test message to the Pickup folder under the SMTP Service mail root.
