IIS 5.0 SMTP: "The drop directory , for * could not be created" Error Message (288538)

Description:
Virtual Server : The drop directory , for * could not be created.
Subsequently, messages do not leave the Pickup folder for the SMTP service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove and reinstall the SMTP service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Add/Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  2. In the Windows Component Wizard dialog box, select Internet Information Services (IIS), then click Details.
  3. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) dialog box, clear SMTP Service. Click OK, then click Next and continue through the rest of the wizard.
  4. In Add/Remove Programs, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  5. In the Windows Component Wizard dialog box, select Internet Information Services (IIS), then click Details.
  6. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) dialog box, select SMTP Service. Click OK, then click Next and continue through the rest of the wizard.NOTE: If you are prompted, insert the Windows 2000 Service Pack CD to reapply the last Service Pack.
