OL2001: Outlook Appears to Stop Responding When You Move Large Groups of Items (288466)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q288466

SYMPTOMS

If you move a large selected group of items from one folder to another by using the drag-and-drop feature in Outlook 2001 for Mac, your computer may stop responding (hang).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, move the items in smaller groups to reduce the total number of items that you move in a single drag-and-drop operation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you move multiple items such as contacts, messages, and other Outlook items, the computer must process the complete operation before it begins to move the items. After approximately 40-60 items, your computer may seem unresponsive as it processes your request. Factors that may contribute to this behavior include the current user load on the Microsoft Exchange Server, the total size of the items that are being moved, and the size of your mailbox. Once the move operation is processed, the selected items are moved.

This problem includes, but is not limited to, moving items in the following scenarios:
  • Moving items between a Exchange Server folder and a personal folders (.pst) file.
  • Moving items from one Exchange Server folder to another folder on the same server.
  • Moving items from a .pst file to another .pst file.
