SUMMARY

If you want to add items, such as an Event List, to a SharePoint team Web site document library or to perform administrative functions by using Netscape 4.x or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x or later from a Macintosh operating system, you must turn off anonymous browsing on the Web server (Internet Information Services server) and turn on basic clear text authentication.

To use a SharePoint team Web site from a browser that is running on a Macintosh operating system, you must enable Basic Authentication.

To turn off Anonymous Access and turn on Basic Authentication, you can use the Microsoft Internet Information Services manager (Microsoft Management Console). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Microsoft Management Console for Internet Information Services.
  2. Right-click the virtual server, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Directory Security tab.
  4. In the Anonymous access and authentication control section, click Edit.
  5. Clear the Anonymous access check box.
  6. Select the Basic authentication check box. When you receive a warning message, click Yes.
  7. Click OK to close Authentication control.
  8. Click OK to close Web site properties. (Click OK to Inheritance overrides.)
  9. Stop and restart the virtual server (right-click the name of the virtual server, for example, default Web site).
  10. Close the Microsoft Management Console.

Note Basic authentication sends user names and passwords across the network in clear text. This is not secure. To secure user names and passwords when you use Basic authentication, you should also configure the server to use SSL.
