SYMPTOMS

The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Registry Provider does not support UNICODE characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to Use the Hotfix Installer

NOTE: You can use this method only for Intel-based computers with Windows 2000 installed.
  1. Copy the Q287917.exe hotfix file to a local folder on your computer or to a share on your network.
  2. Run the Q287917.exe file, and then follow the directions you receive.
  3. Restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
