The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition

This article was previously published under Q287624
For a Microsoft Visio 5 version of this article, see 288249.

SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft Visio connects to an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data source, you may receive the following error message:
Data source client error: State:01004,Native:5,Origin:[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]String data, right truncated
Microsoft Visio may then stop responding or hang.

CAUSE

This error message may appear when the complete file path to the data source exceeds 132 (or more) characters. The drive letter or Universal Naming Convention (UNC) (\\servername\sharename), colon, backslashes, folder name, and file name all count as characters in the path to the source.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, try to shorten the complete file path of the data source to 131 characters or fewer. Suggestions for shortening the path include:
  • Move the data source file closer to the root directory on the drive.
  • Copy the network shared data source file to a local hard disk drive and place it in a folder that is close to the root directory.
  • Create a network share name that is shorter in length.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
