SYMPTOMS

When you open a received plain text message, the formatting of the message may be inconsistent because of improperly placed line breaks.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the AutoClean feature in Outlook 2002 is disabled.

NOTE: Line breaks and hard returns are usually inserted by Internet e-mail gateways as messages travel through them.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you can enable the AutoClean feature continuously or for each message. Use the information in the following section to resolve this behavior.

How to Enable the AutoClean Feature Globally

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On Preferences tab, click Email Options.
  3. Click to select the Remove extra line breaks in plain text messages check box.

How to Enable the AutoClean Feature for Each Message

  1. Open the message that has extra line breaks.
  2. Below the toolbar (in the message), there is a yellow section that reads This message has extra line breaks. To remove, click here.
  3. Click anywhere on the portion of the sentence that says To remove, click here.
  4. This cleans all extra the line breaks and correctly formats the plain text message.
  5. On the message, click the File menu, and then click Save to save this formatting.NOTE: You can remove the AutoCleaned message formatting by clicking the To restore, click here in the yellow section below the toolbar. This saves the formatting.
