Error Message "Error 29280: Failed to Add User to Group" Occurs When You Run Setup (287529)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run Setup for Microsoft Mobile Information Server, Setup may fail, and you may receive the following error message:

Error 29280: Failed to add user to group

In addition, the Setup log may report the following entries:

Error occurred.
Cause: Failed to get the local machine DN.
Error no. 0X800706ba Error message: The RPC Server is unavailable.

-and-

Message ID 29280: Params: 0X800706ba, The RPC Server is unavailable.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if the Mobile Information Server computer does not have a valid A resource record in the Windows 2000 DNS database that is used for the domain that this server is a member of. Setup looks for the server name in DNS.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

Manually add an A resource record. Include the hostname and Internet protocol (IP) address of the Mobile Information Server computer.
-or-
Correct any preexisting issues with DNS dynamic update protocol.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
