ERROR SIGNATURE

This article describes a problem where Microsoft Word 2002 unexpectedly quits (crashes) with the following error signature:
   App Name      App Version      Module Name      Module Version    Offset

   Winword.exe   10.0.2627.0      Winword.exe      10.0.2627.0       0003e861 
		

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you drag an inserted table to a position at the bottom of the document page, and then click above the table, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you do the following:
  1. Insert a table into the document.
  2. Turn on change tracking (on the Tools menu, click Track Changes).
  3. Drag the inserted table to a position at the bottom of the page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn on Track Changes before you insert the table into the document. To do this, click Track Changes on the Tools menu.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
