This article was previously published under Q286391

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Small Business Server version 4.5 to Small Business Server 2000, you may receive the following error message:
A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling Setup.
Some of the symptoms that may occur are:
  • The error is received after you have upgraded Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 to Microsoft Windows 2000, and before you have installed the Microsoft BackOffice Server programs.
  • After you receive the error, the BackOffice Server upgrade cannot continue.
  • The Errorlog.txt file is copied to the \%Systemroot%\Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder, and the file contains the following text:

    LoadComponent failed in ISetupManager::LoadComponentsFromDBObject(): bosetup.dll

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the files that had been copied to the hard disk of your computer during your previous unsuccessful installation attempts. Before you proceed with the installation process, remove these files to increase the amount of free disk space on your hard disk:
  1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the \%Systemroot%\Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder.
  2. Ensure that any data that you want to retrieve from this folder is saved before you delete it. For example, you may want to save the log files to another location for future reference.
  3. After you save any of the data that you may need, delete the contents of the Temp folder.
  4. Close Windows Explorer.
To continue with the installation of BackOffice Server programs:
  1. Insert the Small Business Server CD-ROM, and then click Install Small Business Server 2000.
  2. When you receive the error that is displayed in the Symptoms section of this article, click OK to cancel Setup.
  3. Use Windows Explorer to locate the \%Systemroot%\Profiles\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder.
  4. Open the folder that had been created during the initial phase of Setup. The folder name is "Sitxxxxx.tmp", where "xxxxx" is a random number that is produced by Setup.
  5. In the Sitxxxxx.tmp folder, right-click the Setup.sdb file, and then click Properties. By default, this file is read-only.
  6. Click to clear the Read-only file attribute check box, and then click OK.
  7. Right-click the Setup.sdb file, and then click Edit.
  8. Locate the [CompleteComponentList] section.
  9. Place a semi-colon (;) in front of the line that reads "bosetup.dll", so that the line reads as ";bosetup.dll" (without the quotation marks).
  10. Save the Setup.sdb file, and then close the file editor.
  11. Double-click Setup.exe from the Sitxxxxx.tmp folder to initialize Setup.
NOTE: During Setup, you may be prompted for source installation files. Because Setup had been started from a temporary folder on the hard disk, you have to enter or browse to the location of each source file CD-ROM when you are prompted during Setup.
