This step-by-step article describes how to remove, and then reinstall Microsoft ActiveSync and your Microsoft mobile device.

Step 1: Remove Your Mobile Device From the Cradle, and Then Remove ActiveSync

  1. Remove your mobile device from the cradle.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft ActiveSync, and then click Remove.
  5. When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
  6. When you are prompted to confirm the removal of other synchronization files, click Yes.

Step 2: Remove Your Mobile Device Through Device Manager in Safe Mode

  1. Restart your computer in Safe mode:
    1. Restart your computer. When the power turns on, press F8.
    2. On the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.
    3. If you have a multi-boot or dual-boot configuration, when you are prompted to do so, use the ARROW keys to select Windows 2000, and then press ENTER.
  2. Remove the mobile device through Device Manager:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click System.
    3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    4. In Device Manager, right-click your mobile device, and then click Uninstall.

      Note Because Normal mode frequently hides device problems, you may want to remove any items that are marked with a red "X", a yellow exclamation mark (!), or any devices that you do not use while your computer is in Safe mode.

Step 3: Reinstall ActiveSync and Your Mobile Device

  1. Restart your computer in Normal mode, and then disconnect your mobile device.
  2. Reinstall ActiveSync:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the left pane, click Add New Programs.
    4. In the right pane, click CD or Floppy.
    5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation process.
    6. When you are prompted to do so, connect the mobile device.
  3. Reset your mobile device, and then put it in the cradle.
